THE ENBRIDGE RIDE TO CONQUER CANCER ANNOUNCES $17.3 MILLION RAISED AS 9TH ANNUAL RIDE COMMENCES IN ONTARIO
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
TORONTO, June 11, 2016 – The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer announced 4,253 riders raised $17.3 million for The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation as the ninth annual Ride commenced in Ontario on Saturday. Funds raised through Canada’s largest cycling fundraiser support Personalized Cancer Medicine, the new gold standard in cancer care, at The Princess Margaret, across Ontario, and around the world.
“The Ride is about camaraderie, teamwork and passion and we are extremely grateful to the riders, sponsors, donors, crew members and volunteers, for their efforts in making our ninth annual Ride a tremendous success,” said Paul Alofs, President and CEO of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.
“Two out of five Canadians are expected to develop cancer in their lifetime. Funds raised through the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer are vital for our researchers to revolutionize Personalized Cancer Medicine and enable our world-leading doctors and scientists to detect cancers earlier, diagnose and target cancers more precisely and ultimately provide better support and care to patients and their families. The Princess Margaret remains one of the top five cancer centres in the world, and it is our continued mission to conquer cancer in our lifetime,” Alofs added.
In nine years, the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer raised over $155 million for The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and over $321 million for cancer research, treatment, education and care programs across the country. The annual event draws thousands of participants from around the world and brings together communities of cancer survivors, cyclists and supporters who train and fundraise year-round to participate in the two-day, 200 plus kilometre cycling journey between Toronto and Niagara Falls.
“I am participating in the Ride to Conquer Cancer in memory of my father, who died of bile duct cancer before he could see the age of 65,” said Kerry Allerton, a first-time participant from Toronto.
“My father was undergoing treatment and a clinical trial at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and doctors hoped to perform an operation to help prolong his life. Unfortunately, the cancer spread and it was too late to save my father’s life. As a marathon runner and fitness enthusiast, I’ve signed up for my first Ride to complete a new challenge with thousands of others. We’re coming together to conquer this disease and I know my dad would be so proud,” Allerton added.
Enbridge has been the title sponsor of the Ride to Conquer Cancer, since 2011. Collectively more than 1,700 Enbridge employees, their friends and their families have raised over $6.6 million for the Ride across Canada. Sponsorship funds invested by Enbridge enable more dollars raised by Ride participants to go towards supporting cancer programs at The Princess Margaret
“Enbridge is honoured to be a part of the overwhelming success this year and congratulates everyone for their remarkable effort, in supporting this vital cause,” said James Lord, Enbridge’s Ontario Ride Team Captain.
“Thousands of Canadians, our employees, along with our community of friends and family members, have all been personally impacted by cancer and we are proud to support Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in their efforts to conquer cancer. We look forward to this weekend every year and I hope more people will join us in 2017,” Lord added.
Organizers released the dates of June 10 and 11 for the 2017 event, and encourage people of all athletic abilities to participate in the 10th annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.
“We are thrilled to celebrate The Ride’s 10th anniversary next June and encourage everyone to join us by visiting www.conquercancer.ca or call (877) 699-BIKE,” Alofs concluded.
Ride organizers expect thousands of Ontarians to attend public cheering stations from Toronto to Niagara Falls. For a map of the Ride routes, visit www.conquercancer.ca
